I’m a healthcare provider:
WIC is a wonderful option to refer your patients to if you’re looking to:
- Improve birth outcomes
- Improve infant feeding practices
- Provide access to breastfeeding support
- Reduce iron deficiency anemia
- Improve children’s diet quality
- Lower childhood obesity rates
68% of mothers report they improved the way they feed their families as a result of WIC nutrition education. Additionally, 2 in 3 children who received WIC have a healthy weight status at age 3 years.

Breastfeeding support is available
If you’d like to take your practice to the next level, we recommend the Regional Breastfeeding Liaison (RBL) program.
- We know we can’t increase initiation and duration rates alone, which is why we partner with hospitals, healthcare providers, employers and the breastfeeding support community.
- Request FREE breastfeeding or baby behavior trainings from your Regional Breastfeeding Liaison:
- Central/South San Diego: Contact Kim Elkins
- North San Diego County: Contact Laurelle Hiroshige
- You are welcome to share WIC’s educational materials with the families you serve.
Infant Formula Information
WIC offers the following formulas to WIC participants without a prescription:
- Similac Advance
- Similac Sensitive
- Similac Total Comfort
- Enfamil Prosobee
More information on why WIC has standard contract formulas can be found here.
Medical Formulas and Nutritionals
Your patient may have a medical condition and need medical formulas or nutritionals that are not part of a WIC formula contract.
Refer patients who have Medi-Cal to Medi-Cal for medically necessary formula or medical food before requesting it from WIC.
WIC provides medical formulas and nutritionals when they are not covered by Medi-Cal.

What to know about WIC
- Different options for your WIC appointments: phone, video, online, and in person.
Talk to a WIC team member about the possibilities for your next appointment.
- Paying for your WIC foods is fast and easy with the WIC card. No more checks!
WIC is NOT a Public Charge
- You can qualify for WIC if you meet all requirements, no matter what your immigration status is. WIC does not make you a public charge. You can access WIC and many other public benefits without fear of immigration consequences.

WIC cares about your health
WIC is committed to keeping you and your family safe and healthy. We are still providing remote services where possible. Many appointments are over the phone or over a video call.
If you have scheduled an in-person appointment, here are a few things to note before you come in:
- Masks are optional.
- If you or any member of your household have flu-like symptoms, please do not come to your WIC office. You can still get your benefits!
- Contact your WIC counselor to complete your appointment remotely or reschedule.
- Contact a healthcare professional about your symptoms.
